Star Trek XI producer J.J. Abrams has made some brief comments about the project in an interview with Empire Online today. The magazine suggests that reports of a Kirk and Spock Starfleet Academy-era feature may be erroneous, but Abrams stops short of denying Friday's Variety report.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," says the director with a hint of regret. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
Abrams won't talk directly about the plot, but his remarks don't cast much doubt on Variety's claim that the movie will focus on a younger Kirk and Spock, before they became the heroes we know from ST:TOS. In fact, Abrams' expresses his desire to see some TOS brought back to life.
"Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that. you know, they could live again."
No specifics, but these are the first public comments by Abrams to be published since the revelation about his deal to write, produce, and direct the eleventh feature film.

Nimoy und Shatner gaben beide an, dass sie derzeit nicht an den neusten Entwicklungen des Star Trek Films beteiligt seien und daher ihre Informationen, wie alle anderen Fans auch, nur aus den Nachrichten beziehen. "Ich weiß nur das, was ich gelesen habe; also wahrscheinlich dasselbe wie alle anderen; dass Abrams sein Interesse an einem Star Trek Film bekundet habe und er dabei ein Prequel denke, welches sich um das erste Treffen von Kirk und Spock auf der Akademie dreht," erklärte Nimoy.
